-Learning Disability is explained in many ways. The type that I was diagnosed with at the age 8 was Comprehension and in math.
-Comprehension LD: Reading/Writing/Dyslexia. Reading comprehension problems occur when there is an inability to grasp the meaning of words, phrases, and paragraphs.
-Math LD: Dyscalculia is a math LD. People with dyscalculia have trouble with math at many levels. They often struggle with key concepts.
There I was, sitting on my pink twin sized bed with my pink canopy hanging from the ceiling drooping around my bed. Hilary Duff was most likely playing in the background on my pink radio.....yikes...my parents came into my room and sat on my bed. Both across from me, my mother on my left and my father on my right. I don't remember how they approached this to me, but I knew I was being 'tested' by doctors to see why school was so hard for me. After years of my mother fighting with my teachers, switching doctors, and trying different medications, it felt like today we finally had an answer. "Its called a learning disability", my mother said. I remember being happy at the sound of this. "Finally, we have an answer." I thought. She explained that I have the disability in comprehension and in math. "ah that explains it." I thought. I also remember getting so 'mad'... like "who gave this to me?" and "why just me? or is it everyone?" I remember being told that someone in our family must have it and that is why I have it. After my mom explained everything to me (always in a way so I could understand.) I felt like I was one step closer, I don't know to what, but I knew there was more answers and that my Learning Disability wasn't the complete answer to everything. (I see now that I was still too young.) After a while school was getting a little bit easier now for me, time after time. Less phones calls and letters home about 'Jenna acting up in class' less 'time out' time, less time for a lot of the negative. It was good. I would see a Speech Teacher, I got extra help after school, and during the summer I would either attend summer school (hated that) or my favorite tutor would come over!
but there's more...
